An important Niterói postcard , the São Francisco and Charitas shore offers a beautiful view of Rio de Janeiro and diverse gastronomic and sport attractions . Both beaches have calm waters and are frequent spots for boat races and nautical competitions that fill this part of the Guanabara Bay with movement , color and beauty .
São Francisco Beach is 750 meters ( 0.47 miles ) long and has a wide boardwalk dotted with coconut trees . In the path , walkers share the space harmoniously with skaters and bikers . The road by the sea is filled with bars and restaurants that offer haute cuisine and eclectic gastronomy , as well as other commercial establishments , which give it a high flow of people and cars , from morning till night . One of its entries is the Fróes Road , that separates the Icaraí and São Francisco neighborhoods . From the road , one can see many yacht clubs , where several national yachting medalists do their training .
In 2015 , in one end of the beach , the third biggest Brazilian skatepark ( along with the skate lane of Horto do Fonseca , which is also 2500 meters , or 1.55 miles , long ) was built . The other end of the beach is delimited by the Rádio Amador Square , named in 1990 and used since then for musical concerts and craft fairs , and which separates this beach from Charitas . In front of the square is the century-old Church of Saint Francis Xavier , from which the beach and the neighborhood take their name . It was built by Jesuits in 1696 and protected by national law in 1938 . In it , the inscription “ Charitas ” can be seen , a Latin word that means “ charity ” and that is pronounced “ kah-ri-tas ”.
Mainly residential , Charitas Beach has restaurants , bars and many kiosks , some of them with playgrounds , spread along its thousand meters ( 3280 feet ) of extension . The place is a meeting point for Hawaiian canoe and stand up paddle practitioners . The neighborhood also houses the City Park , a recreation space at the top of an Environmental Protection Area , where paragliding and hang-gliding leaps happen .
Two buildings stand out in the landscape . One of them is the Charitas Mansion . Protected by national law in 1962 , the property was raised in stone and lime in the mid- 18th century and served as the headquarters for the Jurujuba Farm ( which stretched from the current São Francisco neighborhood to the Jurujuba Cove ).
The other outstanding architectural piece is the Charitas Waterway Station , responsible for aquatic transportation between Niterói and Rio de Janeiro , and its refined attached restaurant . The building , with an attractive futuristic design , ends the iconic Niemeyer Way . From this spot and from all the shore till São Francisco , one can appreciate the wonderful sunset – one of the most beautiful natural spectacles in the city .
