ORLA DA PONTA D ’ AREIA PONTA D ’ AREIA SHORE
Polo pioneiro da indústria naval no Brasil , a tranquila e poética Ponta d ’ Areia mantém o clima residencial e pesqueiro que lhe é histórico . Composta na maioria por casas residenciais , o bairro possui no cais de pequenos barcos e nos restaurantes de frutos do mar o atrativo turístico para quem quer experimentar a sensação de uma viagem ao passado niteroiense . Esta orla , aliás , é chamada de Portugal Pequeno por suas características portuguesas não só nas construções remanescentes dos imigrantes , como também pelos descendentes lusitanos que ali perpetuam gerações .
Localiza-se na Península da Armação , cujo nome tricentenário é relacionado ao local para a preparação dos barcos de pesca e para a extinta atividade do descarne de baleias outrora caçadas nas águas da Baía de Guanabara . Na entrada do bairro fica o tradicional Mercado de Peixe São Pedro , frequentado por uma numerosa e diversificada clientela , inclusive de outros municípios , que adquirem frutos do mar ou os consomem nos restaurantes da sobreloja . A Ponta d ’ Areia abriga ainda uma das comunidades mais antigas da cidade , o Morro da Penha , em torno da Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Penha .
A vocação industrial do bairro , fundamental para o desenvolvimento econômico de Niterói e o crescimento do Produto Interno Bruto ( PIB ) do município , teve início com o Mauá , o mais antigo estaleiro privado brasileiro ( 1845 ). O gaúcho Irineu Evangelista de Sousa ( 1813-1889 ), precursor da industrialização brasileira e durante vários anos o homem mais rico do país , foi dono de mais de vinte empresas , com negócios em diversos países . Por sua contribuição à economia do Brasil Império ( 1822-1889 ), recebeu os títulos de barão ( 1854 ) e depois visconde de Mauá ( 1874 ).
Em 1857 , um incêndio destruiu as instalações do estaleiro Mauá , sendo reconstruído em três anos . Em 2000 uniu-se ao Jurong Shipyard , de Singapura , tornando- -se a empresa Mauá Jurong S . A . A nova companhia , além da construção e reparos de navios , ainda fabrica plataformas para exploração de petróleo e gás . Hoje encontram- -se em atividade no bairro também os estaleiros Mac Laren Oil e Cruzeiro do Sul . Outra importante empresa local foi a Companhia de Comércio e Navegação , dona do dique Lahmeyer , o mais sólido do mundo . O conde Pereira Carneiro , seu principal acionista , construiu a vila de casas que leva o seu nome e existe até hoje .
A Ponta d ’ Areia sobreviveu às grandes mudanças socioespaciais sofridas ao longo do tempo . Uma obra pública de revitalização da orla resgatou o chão de paralelepípedos e o calçamento de pedras portuguesas e lhe presenteou com uma praça com desenho da cruz de malta , quiosques e bancos no deque , deixando Portugal Pequeno ainda mais charmoso e nostálgico .
A pioneering center of the naval industry in Brazil , the peaceful and poetic Ponta d ’ Areia keeps its historic residential and fishing atmosphere . Composed mostly of residential buildings , the neighborhood has , on the pier of small boats and in seafood restaurants , the tourist attraction for those who want to experience the feeling of a trip to the past of the city of Niteroi . This shore , by the way , is called Portugal Pequeno ( English : Little Portugal ) due to its Portuguese characteristics not only in the remaining constructions by the immigrants , but also by the Portuguese descendants that perpetuate generations there .
It is located on the Armação Peninsula , whose tri-centenary name is related to the location for the preparation of fishing boats and for the extinct activity of whaling that was once happened in the waters of the Guanabara Bay . At the entrance of the neighborhood is the traditional São Pedro Fish Market , frequented by a numerous and several kinds of customers , including the ones from other cities , who buy seafood or consume it in the restaurants of the mezzanine . Ponta d ’ Areia also houses one of the oldest poor communities in the city , Morro da Penha ( English : Penha Hill ), around the Church of Nossa Senhora da Penha .
The industrial vocation of the neighborhood , fundamental for the economic development of Niterói and the growth of the Gross Domestic Product ( GDP ) of the city , started with Mauá , the oldest private Brazilian shipyard ( 1845 ). Irineu Evangelista de Sousa ( 1813-1889 ), from the state of Rio Grande do Sul , precursor of Brazilian industrialization , and for several years the richest man in the country , owned more than twenty companies , with businesses in several countries . For his contribution to the economy of Brazil ’ s Empire ( 1822-1889 ), he received the titles of Baron ( 1854 ) and later Viscount of Mauá ( 1874 ).
In 1857 , a fire destroyed the facilities at the Mauá shipyard , and was rebuilt in three years . In 2000 , it joined the Jurong Shipyard , from Singapore , becoming the company Mauá Jurong S . A . The new company , in addition to the construction and repair of ships , also manufactures platforms for oil and gas exploration . Today , the Mac Laren Oil and Cruzeiro do Sul shipyards are also active in the neighborhood . Another important local company was the Commerce and Navigation Company , owner of the Lahmeyer dyke , the most solid in the world . Count Pereira Carneiro , its main shareholder , built the village of houses named after his name and still exists today .
Ponta d ’ Areia has survived the great socio-spatial changes suffered over time . A public work to revitalize the waterfront rescued the cobblestone floor and the paving of Portuguese stones and presented him with a square with a Maltese cross design , kiosks , and seats on the deck , making Portugal Pequeno even more charming and nostalgic .
