O templo teria maiores dimensões , porém preservando a simplicidade franciscana no estilo colonial .
With a privileged location , in the central area of the high-class Icaraí neighborhood , the charming Porciúncula de Santana Church is one of the newest in the city . Opened in 1961 with the current dimensions and architecture , the church originates from a small chapel built in the same place in 1881 by Benedictine monks , who owned that land and the area where the São Bento Field is located . However , its recent history began to be written in 1946 , when the Secular Franciscan Order ( SFO ), evicted from a disputed property in São Domingos , moved its headquarters to this small church , which it affectionately called porciúncula , a Latin word which means “ small portion ”.
In 1949 , the diocesan bishop Dom João da Matha de Andrade granted two patron saints to the chapel : the main one , Our Lady of the Angels , celebrated on August 2nd , and a secondary one , Saint Anne , celebrated on July 26th . In addition to these dates , the celebration of Saint Anthony has become a traditional event on June 12th . In the same year , SFO created the Pious Union of Saint Anthony , an assistance entity that has been working to protect the poor until today .
Increasingly crowded by festivities and humanitarian actions by the Franciscan priests , the church became too small for so many visitors . In 1949 , the provincial government and the bishopric approved the design for a new building on the land , a project which had been cherished by Fr . Donato and the faithful for a long time . The temple would have larger dimensions , but would preserve the Franciscan simplicity through its colonial style .
In 1951 , the chapel was demolished and the new building began to be built , starting with the friars ’ convent . That same year , the diocesan bishop solemnly blessed the image of Our Lady of the Angels . Months later , the church received statues of São Francisco ( made at Oficina Fânzeres , in Braga , Portugal ) and of Our Lady of the Angels , donated by Cláudio Mariano , who had collected it from the garbage in the neighborhood of Jacarepaguá , Rio de Janeiro , and arranged its restoration on his own , keeping it since then in his personal collection . Historians estimate that this relic was made around the 18th century .
In 1954 , the new church began to be built , and in June 1961 it was opened . Three months later , it got four steel bells , made in Germany with funds collected from the Catholic community in Niterói . The benches , doors and windows were made in São Bento do Sul , in the Santa Catarina State . In 1965 , it was promoted to parish status .
The imposing Porciúncula de Santana Church brings together a wealth of cultural heritage and traditional events that are part of the official calendar of Niterói .
