IGREJA DE SÃO LOURENÇO DA VÁRZEA CHURCH OF SÃO LOURENÇO DA VÁRZEA
149
Created in the second half of the 19th century to house the new headquarters of the Freguesia de São Lourenço ( currently the São Lourenço neighborhood ) and to make it easier for the faithful to attend Masses , avoiding the need to walk to the top of the São Lourenço hill , the sumptuous Church of São Lourenço da Várzea was planned twentyeight years before its opening . Despite the financial efforts of influential men at that time , the project was as grand as it was complex and challenging .
The building of the temple in the Santana lowland was authorized in 1855 by the provincial government ( currently state government ), which only in 1870 allocated funds for the beginning of the work . In 1871 a commission of landowners – formed , among others , by Father Leandro José Rangel de São Paio , who would be the guardian of the church for decades – chose the land of brigadier João Nepomuceno Castrioto as the sight for the new temple . Castrioto abdicated a third of the value , the rest being paid by the people .
The works started in 1873 , led by engineer Luís Antonio Miranda Freitas . In 1882 , the provincial government allocated more funds to accelerate the completion of the building and replaced the engineer for Heitor de Cordoville , who changed the original project from a neoclassical tendency to an eclectic style . The main facade has a central tower with Doric , Ionian and Corinthian aspects . It was initially supposed to be shaped like and arrow , in Gothic style , but the shape was replaced by a hemispheric dome . Built on stone , the church has a predominantly white and gold interior , with beautiful crystal chandeliers and a precious organ located in the mezzanine . The bells , installed in 1891 , were donated by José Pereira de Souza and João Lopes Bastos .
When the Republic was proclaimçd , it was at this still unfinished Mother church that the first republican directory of Niterói was founded . It elected Francisco Portela as governor , and he invested another significant amount of funds in the building and transferred the administration of the temple to the Diocese of Rio . The progress of the construction was also hampered by the Brazilian Naval Revolt ( 1893-1894 ). Occupied by the 34th Infantry Battalion of the National Guard , the church suffered bombings that damaged it , motivating Father Leandro to hold fundraising parties and bazaars at Jardim São João , attended by the most important rich families .
Completed in 1892 , the building received in 1897 the image of Saint Lawrence and a beautiful Via Crucis , both from Portugal , in addition to statues of Our Lady of the Conception and The Dead Lord donated by anonymous people . That same year , the first Mass was held there . The Blessed Sacrament was transferred from the chapel of the hill to the new church . Its gas lamp was installed in 1901 and electric power came in 1913 . Renovated three times and protected by municipal law in 2001 , the beautiful Church of São Lourenço da Várzea is a monument that reflects the determination , unity and faith of a people around efforts to achieve an ideal .
