Housing one of the oldest religious works of art in the country – the exquisite soapstone sculpture of the Virgin Mary , dated 1570 and declared a federal heritage in 1986 – the remarkable Church of São Francisco Xavier has a privileged topographical position , built on a hill with a beautiful view of Guanabara Bay . Protected by federal law in 1938 , its construction came from the initiative of a group of influential men in 1696 , according to an inscription engraved in rosewood in the sacristy cabinet , which also mentions the names of Father Serafim Leite , and Monsignors Pizarro and Macedo , Milliet de Saint-Adolphe and José Matoso Maia Forte .
Located between the beaches of São Francisco and Charitas , the church was already there when these neighborhoods rose and has survived the urban growth with almost no alterations . It was built on the lands of the old Jurujuba farm , initially belonging to the Society of Jesus , being a landmark of the presence of the Jesuits in the region and one of our most notable colonial relics . Its structure , made of masonry in stone and lime , follows the Baroque-Jesuit architectural style designed by Father Lourenço Gonçalo .
With the banishment of the Jesuits from Brazil , the church and farm were impounded in 1759 , later passing through several owners , among them Major Luís José de Menezes Fróes – also known for the road that connects the neighborhoods of Icaraí and São Francisco , which is named after him – who sold them in 1869 to the provincial ( state ) government , which built the homonymous cemetery that opened in 1899 on the land .
However , in 1890 , the year after the Republic was proclaimed , the government of Francisco Portela returned the temple to the ecclesiastical authorities of Rio de Janeiro , since the Diocese of Niterói still didn ’ t exist . In 1913 , the building was renovated by architect Vicente del Bosco .
Among its relics , in addition to the Virgin Mary in soapstone from 1570 , the church has a main altar with the image of Saint Francis Xavier in gold laminated wood and a ceramic baptismal font made by natives . Dated from the same period , there are two sundials on the outside with the emblem of the Jesuits and a bronze bell with the inscription : “ Melted in 1587 and remelted in 1948 ”. At the base of the hill , the 1727 allotment measurement mark , or “ land top ” – listed as a historical heritage together with the temple – is still visible today , with insignia of the Jesuits dividing the farmlands .
Impressive remnants of Brazil ’ s Colonial period , with little altered original features and rare century-old objects , the Church of São Francisco Xavier is a monument of incalculable value that makes the inhabitants of Niterói very proud .
