Protected by municipal law in 1992 , the Church of Nossa Senhora da Conceição has both religious and political importance for the city . It was the Catholic Mother Church until the construction of the Cathedral of São João Batista was completed , and served as one of the City Council headquarters in the early 19th century . Its history begins in 1660 , when Antonio Corrêa de Pina , a mestizo known as Pai Corrêa , built the chapel in devotion to Nossa Senhora da Conceição with resources donated by the faithful . The work underwent improvements sponsored by the inheritance of José Gonçalves , who passed away in 1663 .
In 1671 , descendants of Arariboia ( Gastão , Sebastiana , Margarida and Violante Soares de Souza ) donated 440 meters of neighboring land to the chapel . When Captain Manoel José de Bessa , who also owned nearby land , died , his heirs offered the church the manor that was later transformed into the Santa Cruz Hospital . With the urbanization promoted in 1820 by judge José Clemente Pereira , the church had its staircase rebuilt and gained the iron bars that still exist today .
The temple was , temporarily , the Mother Church in two periods : from 1819 to 1831 ( a period during which it housed the image of the patron saint of that society , São João Batista , transferred from the extinct Church of Nossa Senhora das Necessidades in Icaraí and currently featured in the Metropolitan Cathedral ) and in 1885 and 1886 , when the cathedral underwent construction work . Attached to the chapel , the first cemetery of the Royal Village of Praia Grande was inaugurated in 1830 . In there , the remains of José Bonifácio de Andrada e Silva , the patron of Brazil ’ s Independence , were buried . However , a few decades later , the service was transferred to Barreto , attached to Maruí .
It was in 1881 that the temple underwent its greatest transformation , designed by João Antonio dos Santos Guaraciaba , who rebuilt and enlarged the temple , in addition to changing the bells , introducing neoclassical elements on the facade and neo-rococo inside . Thus , the simple chapel became an imposing church , reopened in 1882 , at the top of the slope on the street that was named after the saint . The building also underwent renovations in 1905 , 1912 , 1919 and 1992 . Above the main door , there is a tile panel with the figure of Nossa Senhora da Conceição . The main altar is made of Carrara marble , with French stained glass in the background . The Portuguese baroque image of the saint carved in wood , dated from 1672 , and the rarities of its Museum of Sacred Art are highlights of this church .
One hundred steps lead the visitor to this place of prominence in the history of the city , which amidst urban chaos rises to a special topographic level .
