The fourth oldest Catholic temple in Niterói ( after São Lourenço dos Índios and the chapel of the Santa Cruz da Barra Fortress ), the memorable Church of São Domingos de Gusmão is a historic and architectural landmark for the homonymous neighborhood , which was named after the temple . Protected by municipal law in 1995 , it reached its peak between 1816 and 1820 when it was frequented by King Dom João VI , who used to stay with his family in a nearby mansion . The place also became known for hosting the funeral of José Bonifácio de Andrada e Silva , the patron of Brazil ’ s independence , in 1838 . At the time , it was still a simple chapel , built in the 17th century .
Saint Dominic of Osma ( Portuguese : São Domingos de Gusmão ) ( 1170-1221 ) was a Spanish priest canonized in 1234 for his full dedication to preaching the Gospel . He was possibly the patron saint of the homonymous farmer Domingos de Araújo , married to Violante do Céu Soares de Souza , a descendant of Arariboia and heir to the lands that became the great sugar farm that would give rise to the neighborhood of São Domingos .
In his will , dated 1652 , Araújo reserved one of his properties to house the image of Saint Dominic that he had in his farm , and donated another 110 meters of surrounding land to the heritage of the future church of that patron saint . The monument belonged to the family until 1740 , when the couple ’ s son , Francisco de Araújo Soares , transferred the administration to Joaquim Alvares . The chapel was renovated five times until a major remodeling , at the turn of the 20th century , when it was literally rebuilt based on the design of architect Bianor de Mendonça .
The high altar , built in 1816 for the first visit of the monarchs , still has a coat of arms of the empire . The four side altars are dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus , Saint Joseph , Saint Therese and Our Lady of the Conception . The internal ornamentation is eclectic , with neo-baroque , neo-roman and neo-gothic influences . The windscreen at the main door consists of a stained-glass window with the image of Saint Dominic and Our Lady of the Rosary . In 1907 , the new building underwent a major remodeling that enlarged the right side and the back , which changed its original dimensions and gave it the format that it maintains until today . In 1914 , the church received electric light ; in 1929 , it became a parish ; in 1938 , a new renovation replaced the wooden floor with granite and marble .
In the city , there is another chapel devoted to the same saint inside the Gragoatá Fortress , with restricted access , open in 1988 . However , due to its historical importance , the Church of São Domingos de Gusmão is a precious heritage of Niterói that resists the weather and spans the centuries .
