With a trajectory of successive destructions and rebirths , the sublime Church of Nossa Senhora da Boa Viagem is located at the top of the charming homonymous island , with a fantastic panoramic view of Guanabara Bay . Colonial in style , it was built in 1650 by Diogo Carvalho Fontoura , provider of the Fazenda Real farm , which covered the entire area of the current Boa Viagem neighborhood . In the beginning , it was a center of pilgrimages and maritime processions of fishermen and sailors looking for divine protection .
Positioned next to the Boa Viagem Fortress , built in 1702 and now extinct , the church was burned and destroyed during the fighting of French invaders in the early 18th century , but rebuilt in 1718 and restored in 1734 with a new facade . Father Manoel Gomes de Carvalho and 173 other devotees voluntarily participated in the work – a fact stated on the plaque fixed on one side of the temple .
Several important figures visited the island in the 19th century , including English diplomats Henry Chamberlain and William Gore Ouseley in 1822 , American businessman Thomas Ewbank in 1839 and Prince Dom Pedro II in 1846 – the year the place got a new restoration , led by renowned engineer Pedro Toulois . However , it burned down again in 1870 during a party . Its reconstruction , which only happened in 1909 , led by the Sociedade para a Proteção dos Homens do Mar ( Society for the Protection of Seamen ), brought back the cult of Nossa Senhora dos Navegantes .
In 1911 , the island and the church received electric power . In 1918 , both were put under the jurisprudence of the Ministry of the Navy , and the image of the saint was transferred to the Hospital da Marinha ( Navy Hospital ), in Rio de Janeiro . After a period of disrepair , in 1934 the temple received restorations , a maritime procession and the return of the image of the patron saint .
For the best care of the island , the Navy handed over its administration to the 4 º Grupo Escoteiro do Mar ( 4th Scout Group of the Sea ), called Gaviões do Mar ( Sea Hawks ), whose headquarters have been there since 1936 . A new restoration of the church was led by Father Luís Arnaud and the head of the Scout Group , Admiral Benjamin Sodré – guardian of the place until his death , in 1982 , when he was succeeded by his daughter , Maria Pérola Sodré , who passed away in 2019 . The shore of the Boa Viagem neighborhood is named after him . And it was the Boy Scouts who fought the third fire in the church , in 1977 , later restored by engineer Hesíodo Castro Filho .
The Church of Nossa Senhora da Boa Viagem was protected , together with the island , by federal law in 1938 . Opened only once a month for Masses , its access remains rudimentary , through a trail of many steps on a slope . A historic corner of great beauty and tranquility , surrounded by vegetation and sea , and which represents the strength and faith of the ancestral people of Niteroi .
