With an enviable panoramic view of the downtown area , the Church of São Lourenço dos Índios is the symbol of the foundation of the São Lourenço Village , the cradle of the former Royal Village of Praia Grande , which would later become the city of Niterói . Located on top of the homonymous hill , the construction has survived for over four centuries as one of the oldest Catholic temples in Brazil . It was the first occupation of Portuguese colonizers on the eastern side of the Guanabara Bay , built while there was a native settlement in the area , commanded by Arariboia , chief of the Temiminó tribe .
The church is currently a historical heritage protected by both federal law ( since 1938 ) and municipal law ( since 1992 ). It has always served as the stage for the official city anniversary Mass , held on November 22nd of each year . The original architecture of its facade and interior , as well as the attached space with a small archive of indigenous artisanal pieces , recovered from excavations in the neighborhood , enchant the visitors .
A letter from 1570 signed by priest Gonçalo de Oliveira already mentioned a first chapel – made of mud and built on the top of the São Lourenço hill – which gave place to the one we know today . The simple and small construction , opened in 1586 , was replaced in 1627 by a more appropriate temple , made of stone and quicklime . In 1758 , the church was incorporated into the Portuguese Government heritage . It was completely renovated in 1769 , taking the shape that it keeps today , despite the repairs done in the 19th century . With Brazil ’ s Independence , the Brazilian Constitution of 1824 incorporated this property to the brazilian government , and in 1934 the Archdiocesan Curia gave it to the Niterói City Government .
The church has architectural features that appeared in the Counter-Reformation , a movement created by the Catholic Church in 1545 as a response to the Protestant Reformation of Martin Luther . Its solid structure , which has been resisting for over four hundred years , surprises and delights visitors who observe its unusually thick walls . On the inside , the high altar features a marble sculpture depicting the torment of São Lourenço ( English : Saint Lawrence ). The image of the patron saint is one of its priceless relics . Another one is the main altarpiece , dated from the turn of the 16th to the 17th century and considered the oldest art piece in the city . For renowned architect Lúcio Costa , this work is the most beautiful Brazilian example of Jesuit art .
Visiting the Church of São Lourenço dos Índios is reconnecting with the origins of Niterói and its inhabitants .
