A sequence of artistic buildings along the Guanabara Bay shore , the Niemeyer Way makes Niterói the second city in Brazil with the most monuments created by worldrenowned architect and urbanist Oscar Niemeyer ( 1907-2012 ), second only to Brasília . In addition to the priceless architectural value for the national heritage , this cultural and tourist complex has become the perfect setting for beautiful photos and pleasant walks .
The way has eight works over its eleven kilometers ( 6.8 miles ) length : the Oscar Niemeyer Foundation , the Roberto Silveira Memorial , the Oscar Niemeyer Popular Theater ( all three located in a wide courtyard named Praça do Povo , or People Square , very popular with rollerbladers , cyclists and skaters , besides hosting great concerts on separate stages ), the Juscelino Kubitschek Square , the Petrobras Cinema Center , the Contemporary Art Museum of Niterói ( MAC ) and the Charitas Waterway Station .
With headquarters in Niterói since 2013 and an office in Brasília , the Oscar Niemeyer Foundation was created in 1988 as an important center for documentation and teaching of architecture and urbanism . Open since 2003 , the Roberto Silveira Memorial ( or the History and Literature Memory Center of the State of Rio de Janeiro ) houses more than 200,000 digitalized titles about Niterói and the State of Rio de Janeiro . It ’ s the city ’ s first virtual library exclusively dedicated to authors from the State of Rio . The place has computers for electronic consultations , a researched data printing center , a space for exhibitions , a small acoustic auditorium and a big panel painted by artist Cláudio Valério Teixeira depicting the history of Governor Roberto Silveira ( 1923-1961 ).
Operating since 2007 , the Oscar Niemeyer Popular Theater has a capacity for 460 people inside and another 20,000 outside . Its sinuous layout , ramps and reinforced concrete structure are features of its creator ’ s artistic style . One of the tiled sides reproduces doodles from the architect about women and popular manifestations . On the other side , a wall entirely made of smoked glass allows the audience to see the Bay from the interior of the theater ( which also has an arena shape and a reversible stage ), which can be opened for exhibitions to the public outside .
The JK Square ( also known as JK Square ) was idealized and built in the second half of the 20th century , in honor of visionary president Juscelino Kubitschek ( 1902-1976 ). He and Niemeyer are represented by bronze sculptures sitting on a bench , looking at the architectural plan of Brasília . Open in 2004 , the Charitas Waterway Station receives water transport that connect Niterói ’ s Southern Zone to the City of Rio de Janeiro , crossing the Guanabara Bay . Set back from the pier on piles where catamarans dock , it has a panoramic glass front of 700 square meters in the passenger boarding hall , a sophisticated restaurant and convenience stores .
With a beautiful view of the sea , the Niemeyer Way is the embodiment of the perfect harmony between human creativity and the unique nature of Niterói .
