A center for cultural production and dissemination aimed at all artistic manifestations , the must-see UFF Art Center is a precious cultural heritage run by the Fluminense Federal University . Located on the ground floor of the Rectory building , the place has a cinema , a theater , a gallery of visual arts and another for photography , as well as an open space for workshops . The place also offers lectures and debates , providing a rich artistic-cultural interaction between the university and the population .
With an audience currently estimated at 120 thousand people per year , the Art Center is also the headquarters of UFF ’ s own musical formations , such as the String Quartet , the Young Choir , the quintet Música Antiga ( English : Old Music ) and , the oldest and most important , the National Symphonic Orchestra ( OSN-UFF ) – created by President Juscelino Kubitschek in 1961 to promote and spread Brazilian concert music .
Composed by the elite of Brazilian symphonic musicians , OSN lost its headquarters – and its rehearsal place – with the extinction of the Educational Radio Broadcasting Service ( SRE ) by President João Figueiredo in 1982 . On its own initiative , UFF incorporated the 63 musicians ( currently 83 ) to its staff of employees in 1984 and from 1986 managed the orchestra itself , after negotiations with the government .
Before the Rectory , the same address hosted a beautiful manor built in 1916 by German architect Eugen Urban ( 1868-1929 ). In 1932 , the famous Balneário Cassino Icarahy Hotel was installed there , frequented by high society and millionaire tourists . The property was demolished in 1939 for the construction of the current building , where the casino operated until 1946 – when gambling was forbidden in the country – but the hotel and restaurant activities , as well as a theater , were maintained .
After winning a fortune in a bet at the Cassino da Urca , Joaquim Rolla ( 1899- 1972 ), a former merchant from the state of Minas Gerais bought not only the casino that enriched him but also the other casinos in Icaraí , Quitandinha , Pampulha , Araxá and Poços de Caldas . Some of his other projects were Edifício JK ( a building named after former President Juscelino Kubitschek ), in Minas Gerais , Banco Mercantil do Brasil and Pavilhão de São Cristóvão , in Rio de Janeiro .
The hotel-restaurant operated until 1964 , when the building was acquired by the Ministry of Education and Culture , and since 1967 it has housed the administrative departments of UFF , which was created in 1960 as the Federal University of the State of Rio de Janeiro ( Uferj ) and made its current name official in 1965 . It ranks among the top 15 universities in Latin America and is the third largest federal university in the country .
Multiple and productive cultural facility in Niterói , the UFF Art Center is surely one of the most important in the country , whose wise command of a grand university makes its activities even more rich and vibrant .
