PALÁCIO DOS CORREIOS CORREIOS PALACE
Monumental edifício em estilo art nouveau datado de 1914 , o Palácio dos Correios é o cartão de visitas de Niterói para quem chega à cidade de barcas . Inaugurado na presença do então presidente da República , marechal Hermes da Fonseca , para sediar a Empresa Brasileira de Correios e Telégrafos ( ECT ) – primeiro órgão federal instalado no município –, o local hoje abriga a agência central dos Correios da cidade , salões para exposições artístico-culturais no térreo e no terceiro andar e também um auditório para eventos . Desde 2014 , é anualmente palco de um belíssimo e emocionante show de Natal , com apresentações teatrais e musicais gratuitas na área externa , sob um espetacular jogo de luzes .
Antes de sua construção , o serviço de correspondências ocupava um espaço dentro da estação hidroviária , mas , devido ao crescimento e à evolução da cidade , a ECT encomendou o projeto , em 1910 , ao arquiteto italiano Antonio Vannine e a obra , em 1912 , à construtora Leopoldo Cunha . Manoel Meira de Vasconcelos foi o chefe de obras . Constituído por três pavimentos e duas grandes torres que sustentam cúpulas metálicas , o prédio seguia o alto padrão das agências centrais e escritórios regionais dos correios brasileiros .
Em comemoração de seu centenário , o palácio recebeu uma ampla e profunda reforma , entre 2011 e 2014 , que teve o grande desafio técnico e investigativo de restaurar as características primárias do imóvel , incluindo fachadas , cúpulas de cobre , esquadrias de madeira , estruturas laterais metálicas , telhas , pisos em peroba-rosa e peroba-do-campo , revestimentos em granito , fechaduras , dobradiças , trancas e a claraboia , além da pintura . Também recebeu a instalação de uma iluminação especial externa , de tecnologia avançada , que o valoriza e o destaca à noite . As peças faltantes foram substituídas por réplicas das originais . Os elementos decorativos , incluindo os mosaicos em pastilhas , foram reconstituídos por computador , modelados e impressos .
O projeto também inseriu elementos modernos de segurança , circuito de câmeras , controle de fluxo , climatização , acessibilidade e tecnologia da informação . Para garantir a durabilidade e confiabilidade do desempenho da edificação , todas as instalações hidráulicas , sanitárias , elétricas e mecânicas foram substituídas por novas . Para realizar este trabalho , a equipe da obra contou com restauradores e artistas plásticos , que corrigiram erros cometidos em reformas anteriormente realizadas , ao longo do século XX , sem o cuidado de preservação da arquitetura histórica .
Após o restauro do imóvel , também passou a funcionar nas suas dependências o Espaço Cultural Correios , com exposições de diversos artistas e oficinas artísticas , além de palestras e recitais no auditório . Foi tombado como patrimônio histórico estadual pelo Inepac em 1990 e municipal pelo Depac em 1993 , o que chancela sua importância história , arquitetônica e cultural .
A monumental building in art nouveau style , dated from 1914 , the Correios Palace is a postcard of Niterói for those who arrive in the city by ferry . Opened in the presence of the President of the Republic at that time , Marshal Hermes da Fonseca , to host the Brazilian Post and Telegraph Company ( ECT ) – the first federal agency in the city –, the building today houses the city ’ s central Post Office , halls for artistic and cultural exhibitions on the ground and third floors and also an auditorium for events . Since 2014 , it is annually the stage for a beautiful and exciting Christmas event , with free theatrical and musical performances outside , with a spectacular lighting effect .
Before its construction , the post service occupied a place inside the waterway station . However , due to the growth and evolution of the city , in 1910 ECT commissioned the design of a new building to Italian architect Antonio Vannine , and , in 1912 , hired the Leopoldo Cunha Construction Company . Manoel Meira de Vasconcelos was the foreman . Consisting of three floors and two large towers that support metal domes , the building followed the high standard of ECT central agencies and regional offices .
The palace underwent a wide and deep renovation between 2011 and 2014 , in celebration of its centenary . It was a big technical and investigative challenge to restore the building ’ s primary characteristics , including facades , copper domes , wooden frames , metal side structures , tiles , peroba-rose and peroba-do-campo floors , granite cladding , door locks , hinges , locks and the skylight , in addition to painting . The palace also received a set of special external lighting , with advanced technology , which enhances it and highlights it at night . The missing pieces were replaced by replicas of the originals . The decorative elements , including mosaic tiles , were reconstituted by computer , modeled and printed .
The project also included modern elements of security , camera circuit , flow control , air conditioning , accessibility and information technology . To ensure the durability and reliability of the building ’ s performance , all hydraulic , sanitary , electrical and mechanical installations have been replaced with new ones . To carry out this work , the team had restorers and artists , who corrected mistakes made in renovations that were carried out throughout the 20th century , without the care of preserving historic architecture .
After the building ’ s renovation , the Correios Cultural Center also began to function on its premises , with exhibitions by various artists and artistic workshops , in addition to lectures and recitals in the auditorium . The Correios Palace was protected by state law in 1990 and by municipal law in 1993 , which confirms its historical , architectural and cultural importance .
