FORTALEZA DE SANTA CRUZ DA BARRA SANTA CRUZ DA BARRA FORTRESS
71
The oldest fortification in the Americas in continuous occupation – where , since 1567 , a sentry soldier has been protecting it – the monumental Santa Cruz da Barra Fortress is a historical and uniquely beautiful site . It was the main defensive structure of the Guanabara Bay during the colonial and imperial periods . Niterói ’ s largest fortification , with over seven thousand square meters ( 22965,88 square feet ), the fortress walls were built with stones cut and set by hand and keeps a collection of 45 cannons from the 18th and 19th centuries .
The first military facility in that place , named Bateria Nossa Senhora da Guia ( English : Our Lady of Guidance Battery ), was built in 1567 , shortly after the expulsion of French privateer Nicolas Durand de Villegaignon by Portuguese troops led by Estácio de Sá with the support of the Temiminó tribe , led by native chief Arariboia . In 1612 , it was expanded and renamed Santa Cruz Fortress . The denomination “ da Barra ” was incorporated into the name of the Niteroi ’ s fortification only in the 19th century to distinguish it from the homonymous fortress that was in the city of Rio de Janeiro ’ s downtown .
The fortification is located next to the entrance channel of the Guanabara Bay , through which all boats destined to Rio de Janeiro and Niterói must go . With a privileged view of the shore of these two metropolises , it is possible to admire the natural beauty of the region , which includes the Atlantic Forest , rocky mountains and the immensity of the sea at the point where ocean waters meet the bay .
It was the stage of important moments in the history of Brazil , such as the prevention of French and Dutch invasions . Its prison received distinguished figures such as José Bonifácio , Bento Gonçalves and Euclides da Cunha . During the Brazilian Naval Revolt , it fought against the Villegaignon Fort . In 1922 , in the Tenentista Revolt ( a political philosophy of junior army officers – lieutenants – who contributed significantly to the Brazilian Revolution of 1930 ), it fired at the Copacabana Fort . Its last shot , against the cruiser Tamandaré , was on November 11th , 1955 . Currently , it is the headquarters of the Divisional Artillery of the 1st Army Division .
The shooting batteries of the building were built in carved stone . Two levels are covered with granite roof , lime mortar and crushed shellfish and have niches with small openings for each cannon . At the top , at the level of the outdoor batteries , there was a lighthouse that aided navigation . In the present , there is a cultural facility in its place . There are also several cells where soldiers arrested privateers and enemies of the Portuguese Crown . In the same lookout , in front of the entrance to the fortress , a refined party house was built .
The site houses the second oldest church in the city , built in 1612 under the name of Nossa Senhora da Guia Oratory and later renamed the Chapel of Santa Bárbara ( English : Saint Barbara ) due to the 1.73 meter ( 5 ’ 8 ” ft ) high image of the patron saint , coming from Portugal , sculpted in the 18th century on a rock with semi-precious stones . Protected by federal law in 1939 , the sensational Santa Cruz da Barra Fortress impresses for its grandeur and beauty , making it an essential tour for all visitors to Niterói .
