It was 3.30am on the last Friday of Term 3 when we all gathered at school to make our way to Auckland Airport. Freezing and bleary-eyed, t
he three oldies - Mrs Cann, Mrs Gray and Mrs Ladd and the 5 lovely young ladies - Nicole, Georgia F, Georgia D, Sarah and Letisha piled into 3 cars and
headed off. There was much excitement as many of the girls had never been on a plane before.
We arrived in Wellington at 9.30, so we had the whole day and evening ahead of us. This was just as well because our itinerary was very busy. First we
headed to the Bee Hive, where we were taken on a riveting tour by the grumpiest tour guide ever. Mrs Gray kept getting into trouble with her for wandering
off the tour route and looking into rooms that she wasn’t supposed to (not very good role-modelling Mrs Gray!) Parliament is an amazing building full of stunning artwork and interior design. It is also very earthquake-proof as our journey down into the basement to look at the foundations revealed. The most interesting part of the tour was going into the speaking chamber which you see on the news all the time. Unfortunately, you’re not allowed to sit in the politician’s
chairs.
The next part was Mrs Ladd’s favourite because it involved lots of shopping in the centre of Wellington. After a quick lunch we were off again, this time on the
cable car heading to the planetarium. At this point the busy day proved too much for the girls and while the rest of the audience marvelled at the wonders of
the universe, they snored away gently in their lazy boys.
Saturday morning saw us rise early with a quick run up Mt Victoria. This was Mrs Gray’s brilliant idea and while Mrs Cann and Mrs Ladd managed to get the
top the 5 youngsters straggled along behind gasping for breath and complaining bitterly. Breakfast soon cheered them up howev er, and so it was off to Te
Papa, New Zealand’s most famous museum. That afternoon it was time to get ready for the Wonderful World of Wearable Arts show . This was the main
reason for the trip to Wellington and we couldn’t wait to get dressed up in our best.
The show was spectacular – almost like a stage show rather than just a fashion show. The lighting, music and sets were amazing. The clothes featured were
quirky, unusual and sometimes bizarre – a particular favourite of mine being the bra made out of possums.
Sunday was our last day in Wellington and proved to be a highlight with the girls and Mrs Cann testing their limits at adrenaline valley.
