The Big “C”

I think the worst dreams are the ones of falling. Down,
down, down into never-ending darkness. Heart racing, gutwrenching, twisting and gnawing at the icy pit of your stomach.
Sammi sat up, breathing hard. Sweat plastered her hair
to her face. Something was different. Wrong. Something in her
dream had changed. Five years of the same dream and now it
changes? She went to kick her duvet to the ground, and searing
pain shot up her side. She looked down. Blood seeped from a
fresh wound on her left leg, onto red-drenched sheets. "What
the ...?" she whispered. She tried to move. What the hell was
going on? Already she was light-headed from blood loss and
she collapsed back onto the pillows. Fear ate at her heart,
trickling acid through her body. Darkness folded in on her,
crushing her lungs. She began to fall.
When Sammi next woke up she felt disorientated. She
was lying flat on her stomach, wearing nothing but a flimsy
singlet and shorts. It was pitch black and freezing. Her fingers
and toes were painfully numb. Her body trembled. She peered
into the darkness, bewildered, trying desperately to make
sense of it. One minute she was lying in bed, the next she was
falling, barely conscious. And now here she was, in what she
guessed to be a hole. A deep dark hole, at the bottom of God
knows where. It was impossible for her to know just how deep
underground she really was, but there was no light over-head.
She got to her knees, arms spread wide, testing the
boundaries of the darkness. When she didn't hit anything, she
continued to standing position, slowly, making sure her leg
could take the pressure. Feeling above her she touched a cold
damp ceiling inches above her head. She stretched her arms to
either side and touched the wall to her right. There was nothing
