Page 100 - Ngaruawahia High School Kapa Haka USA Tour 1998 The Arizona landscape differed from Utah in that it became more ‘cut up’ and interesting and at times looked like a balder version of New Zealand’s volcanic plateau. Jesse spent all of the trip south with his beloved headphones and rap music. The driver was asked if the group could detour slightly and drive down Las Vegas Boulevard (The Strip) on the way through to Boulder City so that it could be seen in daylight. All clocks were put back one hour (19 hours behind NZ) and the strip was cruised at 6:30pm with eye-balls and cameras popping all over! The group saw some of the famous casinos and caught a glimpse of Excalibur, where they had booked in for Thursday and Friday nights. Several stretched limo’s were parked outside Caesar’s Palace and it was obvious that the glitz of the Strip needed to be seen at night when all the lights were on. Photographs that were taken from behind the bus windows were not too successful as the image caught the reflections of the photographer or the flash unit in the glass. The 1,000 foot high Stratosphere coaster was earmarked early for visiting on Friday. The Strip in daylight lacks the excitement of the lights at night. It all looked quite messy and plain.
