something our school has been working towards for some time.  
It  will  provide  a  safe  and  nurturing  environment  as  students 
come to terms with the culture of secondary school.  This will 
be  ready  for  a  2010  start  and  will  be  lead  by  a  group  of 
passionate,  committed,  hard  working,  innovative  and  caring 
people. 
These  are  just  some  of  the  accomplishments  the  school 
have  achieved  this  year  and  we  continue  to  look  forward  to 
more.... 

Y13 Students Farewell 
The  Head  Students  of  2009  Vaughan,  Hinemaia,  Kayla, 
Jordan, and Manaaki, thank you for being you.  You are all such 
gifted  and  talented  young  people  and  will  be  great 
ambassadors  for  Ngaruawahia  High  School.    In  academic, 
cultural,  social,  and  leadership  spheres  each  one  of  you  have 
contributed,  have  shared  and  have  excelled.    I  could  not  be 
more proud of you than I am standing here tonight. 
Indeed  to  all  of  the  Y13  as  you  embark  upon  your  life’s 
journey hold fast to those things that matter upper most in this 
world – he tangata, he tangata, he tangata – it is mankind, it is 
mankind,  it  is  mankind.    Cast  your  net  wide,  but  retain  those 
core values important to us. Your academic pursuits, your social 
growth  and  true  adultship  will  all  come  to  fruition  in  its  own 
time because of you, not in spite of you.  Remember who you 
are and where you have come from – be proud of that always.

To wairua ki Te Atua, nana nei nga mea katoa. 

Sir Apiranga Ngata’s wise advice to a young acquaintance ? 

‘Grow o tender young shoot for the days of your 
world 
Your  hand  reaching  for  the  tools  of  the  Pakeha 
for your physical wellbeing 
Your  heart  with  your  ancestral  heritage,  a 
topknot of pride for your head 
Your  spirit  to  God,  who  is  the  Creator  of  all 
things.’ 

So go forth, achieve that to which you aspire, and all I ask in 
return is that you embody the vision statement of our school – 

Be  empowered  with  the  knowledge,  skills, 
attitude  and  values  to  enable  you  to  lead  a 
rewarding and fulfilling life, to be able to make a 
positive contribution to society. 

Remember  this  so  that  on  your  journey  build  within  you  a 
depth and strength of character that will serve you honourably 
and society exponentially.

My Vision for Ngaruawahia High School 
I  have  always  had  a  love  of  teaching  –  and  every  school  I 
have  worked  in  I  have  found  true  reciprocity through because 
of  it  –  especially  in  my  relationships  with  students.    For  this 
reason teaching has been, and always will be, my love and my 
passion.    With  these  I  bring  to  Ngaruawahia  High  school  my 
essence. 
In  keeping  with  this  reciprocity  and  in  establishing  a  vision 
for  the  school    I  reflected  upon  the  philosophy  of  our  kuia  Te 
Puea  Herangi  in her   articulation  of  the  vision  she had  for  our 
Waikato people... 

[Me ka moemoea au, ko au anake 
Me ka moemoea tatou, ka tae e tatou 

Te ohonga ake i taku moemoea 
Te puawaitanga o aku whakaaro 
If I dream, I dream alone 
If we dream, we achieve together 

Furthermore she asserted – 

Te Puea Herangi 
The waking from our dreaming 
Leads  to  the  blossoming  of  our 
aspirations 

So to this end I have decided to co?construct the vision with 
the help of staff and students of Ngaruawahia High School.  So 
watch this space for more! 
In  closing,  my  final  message  is  to  you,  the  students  of 
Ngaruawahia  High  School.    I  leave  you  with  these  thoughts  as 
espoused  by  the  President  of  the  United  States  Barack 
Obama....
