Poroporoaki to Ben
To Jan, Mike, Stephanie, Jess,
and Tom. Our hearts have been
with you ever since the news of
Ben reached us. I would like to
say that although Ben was with us
for only a short time his sphere of
influence seems to have radiated
and reverberated throughout the
world to such far away places as
Britain and Europe.
I am proud to have known Ben and prouder still that he is a
product of Ngaruawahia High School. As Jan so clearly
articulated on his birthday, he is the epitome of our Vision
Statement , he was empowered, and he led a rewarding and
fulfilling life, and through this contributed significantly to
society. In fact he left an indelible mark on this world – he will
not be forgotten – ki a koutou te whanau kei raro tonu i te
kapua pouri, e tangi tonu ana te ngakau. E tukuna atu ana tana
wairua, engari e puritia tonutia ana nga maumaharatanga
mona i te wa o te ora. He mihi aroha tenei ki a koutou te

whanau. In grief we let his spirit go but hold fast to his memory
and everything that is Ben.
It is indeed an unexpected honour to be standing here
tonight giving the Principal’s address. This time last year I had
no idea this was to be.
David’s Farewell
To David I give my sincerest thanks for the guidance,
respect, confidence, trust, and friendship his leadership
bestowed upon me. Without this, and the work of Barbara
Cavanagh before him, this position would not have been a
reality for me.
In farewelling David, I thank our Kaumatua from
Turangawaewae Marae and our senior students, firstly for the
very moving tribute paid to David for his time here, and
secondly, for accompanying David to his new school in
Taumarunui, supporting him as he embarks upon another facet
of his journey in life. We wish David, Helen, Brandon, Daniel
and Mark all the best for the future.
Staff Congratulations
Firstly to Vicki Ladd for her successful application for
NZPPTA study award scholarship. Vicki will be taking leave
2010 to pursue her M. Ed. Leadership at Waikato University.
A double congratulations to Tania Hill for likewise
successfully gaining the NZPPTA study award scholarship, and
most importantly, for the birth of their long awaited second
daughter Keirra Jayde. Tania too is pursuing a Diploma in Ed.
Leadership through Massey University.
To my management team – Deputy Principal Chris Jarnet –
and Acting Assistant Principal, Barney Wharakura – I thank you
for your willingness to step up so quickly, for your
professionalism, commitment, hard working ethic, and most of
all your loyalty and collegiality. Without you as a new Principal
this term I would be lost.
To the Board of Trustees, Administrative staff, teachers and
students of Ngaruawahia High School for believing in me and
