The Little Box
By Benjamin Jarnet, Y13
Twelve o’clock. I stand at the
entrance. The sun shines brightly down
upon the buildings and there are no clouds
in the sky. A smiling lady walks past pushing
a pram. A hardly noticeable breeze makes a
gardens’ roses gently sway in the wind. A
few birds are singing their tunes in the
trees, but otherwise it is quiet.
I slowly start approaching the
buildings. I draw a little closer. There are
faint sounds of voices. Pleasant laughter.
The sound of children.
And then a sudden flash. The sign on
the door “Detention”. Perfectly
visible for a second and then gone.
I suddenly realized I had reached the
front classrooms. I tighten
my grip on a little box
inside my pocket. It
will come in handy
later. Like a startled

classrooms. I think of smiling little faces.
Then another flash. The principal’s
narrow eyes staring into mine. A
reddened face with scrunched?up
eyebrows. Perfectly visible for a
second, then gone.
I turn the corner. I am standing
outside the library. Two girls walk out and
start towards one of the classrooms. I stand
under the shade of a large tree and watch
them, gripping the little box even tighter.
My emotions are like a packet of
sweets. I have a flavor of anger and
humiliation from the flashes. But also a
flavor of happiness and relief from the little
box in my pocket. The little box will fix
things.
Without looking back I make my way
towards the entrance of the library. With
my mind racing with thoughts of why I am
here, I walk in.
A sudden change in temperature
catches me immediately. The air
conditioners steadily blow outbursts of cool
air into the large room. There is silence,
even quieter than outside. One boy is sitting
at a desk, reading a book. The
librarians are typing
away
on
their
computers.
I scan the
familiar surroundings
of the large room.
Books. Shelves and
shelves of books. Once
more I tighten my grip
on the little box. The
shelves are made of
wood. And the books
are made of paper.
Perfect!
I walk over to the fiction section and
take out my little box. I slide the covering
off and pull out a small stick. I glance
around. Nobody is watching. I approach the
nearest bookshelves. I scrape the small stick
across the side of the box. And then … I
have it! The small stick is lit! I see a
flickering orange light of joy.
But then I saw a raging waterfall of
flashes. Angry faces. Heads hung in
disappointment. And shame.
But I don’t care. It all ended here.
Today had finally come.
Time passed. It was still the same
day. But things were different. I hide in my
old hiding spot watching the spectacle. Big
clouds grow atop the library. It is no longer
quiet. Instead there are terrified screams in
all directions, and uniformed men are
rushing out of red trucks. Several hoses
spray water onto the library but it doesn’t
matter. It is too late. I know the building is
being tortured by the giant orange wall and
nothing can be done about that. I cradle the
little box in my hands triumphantly.
I remain hidden as I watch the drama
for what feels like years. I wait an eternity
for people to hurry up and leave. I want to
wait for quietness again. When quietness
finally comes I decide to leave.
