The NZQA (our qualifications authority) changed the levels of
achievement at Level 1, Level 2, and Level 3 to Achievement with
Merit and Achievement with
Excellence, as an endorsement of
students who gain a significant
number of Merit and Excellence
credits.
To
earn
a n
endorsement at Merit and
Excellence levels, students
must gain a minimum of
50 credits of Merit or 50
credits at excellence.
This is not as easy as it
looks guys!!
We have in the
past had several
students who have
passed NCEA Level 1 and 2 with a Merit endorsement, but so far, none at
Excellence level, until 2008.
Our school was fortunate enough to have two students earn this privilege
– Sarah?Michelle Washer and Anne Roa.
The girls were asked to share with all of us their “secret recipe” for
gaining an endorsement at Excellence, and here is what they said.
Anne (far left) said “I had an incentive to achieve NCEA with Excellence.”
Sarah says “I wanted to prove to myself that I could compete with others
from any other school and that I could achieve excellence at this school.”
Advice to up?and?coming Year 11’s…..
“Do your Art!!”
“Do all your internals otherwise there’ll be too much pressure in the exams”
“Tell your teachers you are aiming high or to excellence because they will help”
“Focus on all your exam subjects, but focus more on those subjects you are
confident in”
“Make sure you pass your English credits or Te Reo Maori”
“Make time to study outside of school”
“Take lots of notes”
“Go to all the exam tutorials”
“Take all practice exams seriously”
“Chase up your teachers for your internal assessments”
“An upside to this was putting Ngaruawahia High School on the map”
Sarah?Michelle Washer:
Gained 75 credits at excellence level. 46 of those credits coming from
external assessments (exams). These were achieved from a wide range of
subjects including: Accounting, Graphic Design, Economics, English,
Mathematics, Science, Visual Arts (in fact all of Sarah’s subjects).
Anne Roa:
Gained 59 credits at excellence level – 32 of those coming from external
assessment. Anne’s subjects include, Business Administration, Economics,
Mathematics, Science, Visual Art, Level 1 and Level 2 Te Reo Maori.
For those in the times of the old School Certificate this is like having
heaps of “A’s” – how many of us did that!
These young ladies provide an incentive to all those coming after them,
especially this year’s Year 11 students. Among them are quite a number of
potential endorsements at Excellence, so we are looking forward to increasing
the excellence rate.

Kopapa Regatta
What a great opportunity for
paddlers to practise competition
Kopapa, initially at the Onehunga Basin
Reserve, but after the flood gates were left
open, we arrived to an empty lake. We were
diverted to the Orakei Basin and eventually
started racing after karakia and setting up
camp.
There weren’t too many schools there,
but it was awesome to come up against the
‘guns’ from Nga Taiatea and Tamaki Makaurau
whanau o Te Puna Matauranga (hosts).
A big mihi to those paddlers we took,
especially to Jordan and Kingsley who had too
much kaha and snapped two paddles.

Ngaruawahia High School being
represented by ten teams at the Ngaruawahia
Regatta held on Friday 13th March, 2009 at the
Riverside, Turangawaewae Marae.
A huge congratulations to all those who
participated, training tirelessly over the past
