NFC PROVIDES EMERGENCY FINANCIAL AID TO STUDENTS THROUGH CARES ACT & NFC FOUNDATION STUDENT RELIEF FUND
The CARES Act , passed last year to provide
relief from the economic impact of COVID-19 , authorized the U . S . Department of Education to provide funding for universities and colleges to award emergency financial aid to eligible students .
North Florida College received $ 357,742 in CARES Act funds in April 2020 and in return dispersed emergency aid to 297 students over the 2020 spring and summer terms . NFC determined need based on eligibility criteria set by the U . S . Department of Education . Students had to be currently enrolled at the College and have a federal financial aid application ( FAFSA ) on file , among other criteria , to qualify .
“ CARES Act funds allowed North Florida College to provide much-needed resources to students in their time of need ,” said Micah Rodgers , NFC Dean of Administrative Services . In accordance with federal guidelines , the funds assisted students with needs related to housing , food , childcare , technology and course materials . Student award amounts varied from $ 500 to $ 900 each based on each student ’ s individual financial situation . To further meet the need for urgent , short-term aid for the NFC student body , the NFC Foundation established the NFC Student Relief Fund in April . The NFC Foundation distributed a total of $ 18,736 in emergency aid to 53 NFC students during the spring and summer terms . The aid helped students with living expenses , utility bills and groceries among other necessities . This aid was not funded by the CARES Act but met the same goal of keeping students in school during the financial hardships created by the pandemic . The Foundation utilized existing funds and donations for the NFC Student Relief Fund that will continue to be a resource for NFC students in times of extreme need .
