Catlin Deeson NFC Student , A . S . Registered Nursing
nursing facility in Dowling Park . “ Working as a CNA , I have the task of assisting the residents with activities of daily living , such as bathing , assisting with eating , and maintaining a good quality of life .”
She says she has “ learned a lot of skills and experience ” over the past seven years as a CNA ; experience that has well-prepared her for NFC ’ s nursing program . A single mother of two , Catlin earned an Associates in Arts degree at NFC in 2020 while working on RN program prerequisites . Though returning to college has not been easy , especially during the pandemic , Catlin says her family gives her the motivation and support to make it through .
“ One of the biggest challenges I have found with attending school , working part-time , and being a single mother is finding the time , but when something is your goal and your dream , you make the time ,” said Catlin . “ My mother has been a great support system for helping with the children and providing motivation . My kids have given me the strength to make it through this past year and to make the decision to further my education . My five-year-old son Wesley looked at me one day and said , ‘ Mama , you ’ re going to be a good nurse one day .’ With tears in my eyes , I hugged him and told him he did not know how much I needed to hear that .”
She also credits NFC , and especially her instructors , for providing support along her educational journey .

“ The online portion of the classes , zoom meetings , and phone calls have all made furthering my education more accessible . The staff have made it known that they are here for you and that you are not alone . If you need help with anything , they go out of their way to help you academically . They apply nursing fundamentals with practical , real-life situations to show that these skills are applicable to real-life nursing . Excellence and professionalism are expected from the students which teach us what is required out in our chosen profession .”
Catlin is ready to make a difference in nursing , a field long-facing labor shortages and now pandemic burnout . “ It is a very sad situation , but it is a time that makes or breaks you . It pushes you to further your education in the medical field or shows you that it ’ s not meant to be . The battle with COVID has exhausted healthcare workers everywhere , and it ’ s time for new students to step up to the plate . This program allows me to add more tools to my belt in order to further fight it .”
After becoming an RN , Catlin hopes to work in an intensive care unit or NICU but says working with the elderly also holds a special place in her heart .
