FROM CLASSROOM TO JOBSITE

PREPARING THE NEXT GENERATION OF CONSTRUCTION LEADERS

For construction management students, preparing for a career in the industry takes more than they can learn in the classroom. At Wentworth Institute of Technology, the student-run Construction Management Club( WIT CMC) helps bridge that gap by connecting students with industry professionals and providing opportunities for mentorship, networking, project tours and professional development.

NEXTGEN student publisher Charli Campbell spoke with WIT CMC members about their paths into construction, the skills employers are looking for, the challenges of transitioning from the classroom to the jobsite and what they have learned as they prepare for careers in the industry.

Joining the conversation were Melanie Chaves, president; Kiele Sarnie, associate director of marketing; Carson Roberge, executive board member; and Michael D’ Agostino, WIT CMC advisor.
Founded in 1980, WIT CMC is a studentrun organization that works closely with the Associated General Contractors( AGC) and the Construction Management Association of America( CMAA) to prepare students for careers in construction management.
The club focuses on professional development through networking events, company visits, resume and LinkedIn reviews, project tours, guest speakers and mentorship opportunities. Students also attend national conferences and industry events, gaining exposure to professionals and projects outside the classroom.
Unlike many campus organizations, WIT CMC’ s executive board remains active yearround, allowing students to stay connected with industry trends and opportunities throughout the summer and winter breaks.
