Judy was an elementary school teacher and community volunteer in El Paso, Texas. When she retired, she continued to help in classrooms and volunteer at the public library. She never stopped teaching. Unfortunately, I never had the opportunity to meet Judy. I came to know about her through her estate, because she left the College of Education a generous gift. Judy’s gift will benefit our general fund which allows us to use it where it is needed most. That could very well have been her intention. I just wish I had known specifically how she would have liked for her life to be celebrated by our College. I came to this profession later in life. I chose it because of my reverence for legacy. I wanted to help others create meaningful legacies that represent their life’s work and the passion within their hearts. I do not consider it my job to convince you to give. If you are interested in giving to our College, my job is to make sure you are aware of all the possibilities and to make your gift and the experience as meaningful as possible for you. There are many phenomenal programs across our College that some people may not readily associate with a College of Education, such as our Sports Leadership Program (see the article about Connie Andujar). If you are planning on leaving a gift to our College in your estate, please let me know. I would like to make you aware of the opportunities in our College that may appeal to you. I can draft an agreement that ensures the University and the College will use your gift specifically as you intended. You don’t even have to name an amount. It can simply be a percentage of what’s left in your estate. I recently had the privilege of working through this process with Dr. Joan Gipe and Dr. Martha McCarthy, whose stories are in this issue. In both cases, we created legacies that beautifully captured their passions and will continue their life’s work forever. Please take time to read the wonderful stories inside this issue of Next. They are moving stories of our alumni, faculty and students in the field meeting challenges head on, making a difference across Kentucky, our nation and the world. I am humbled and grateful to be a part of it. Gratefully, Jeff Francisco Director of Development UK College of Education
