mathematical
flaws of NASCAR
championships

A sports writer recently consulted with
Dr. Molly Fisher, an assistant professor
of math education in the college’s
STEM Education Department,
on the mathematical flaws of the
current NASCAR championship
points system. The article, “A Points
System that Works,” was published
on www.sportsonearth.com. Despite the
author’s misquote of the Fibonacci
sequence, Fisher still managed to get
the mathematical term “Fibonacci” in
an article about NASCAR. The article
even prompted a personal phone call
from Carl Edwards, the driver who
does a back flip off his car each time
he wins a race. «
College of Ed students live and learn, together
The UK College of Education now
has two groups of students living
in residence halls geared toward
developing community among those
pursuing the same academic focus. The
new EdLife and KHP Living Learning
programs are for students interested
in teaching and careers in kinesiology
and health promotion, respectively.
Both programs give students handson learning experiences, interaction
with faculty as well as upper-level peer
mentors, special courses connected
with the programs, and the chance
to lead and teach others. During the
college’s annual retreat, students from
the programs came to Dickey Hall to
meet and converse with faculty and staff. «
