Message from the curators:
Merit:
The idea to organise an interdisciplinary
festival emerged from a desire to see for
myself what young Estonian circus artists
are up to. We grew up in the same environment, and now they are all over the
world engaging with new people, new
ideas and new modes of creativity. I felt
it was a good time to bring them back to
Estonia so they could share with us the
newest trends in circus development. I
hope that it will inspire and provoke a
discussion.
There is still a big lack of understanding
around the circus art in Estonia. It is often
associated with animals in a tent, or with
red-nosed clowns. I want to show people
who still have these clichéd opinions something new: new circus. This is the logic
behind my idea to invite circus artists and
fine artists to work around the same topics. At first, we assumed that fine artists
have it easier, as they do not have to fight
with old judgments or justify their existence. However, as we soon realised, no
one has it easy. We have similar worlds,
each with their pros and cons.
and made some new friends in the field. I
believe that Merit has choosen a program
that gives very good overview of what
the contemporary circus is about.
