We did an all-Estonian gala performance
in April 2013, during which a band called
Criminal Elephant band played for the artists. Cooperation was easy between the
band and the Folie artists. In autumn of
2013, Kaspar Jancis, one of the members
of Criminal Elephant; called me with an
idea. They had just come out with their
new album, “Bonestranger,” and he wanted to create a circus performance based
on his music. He specifically asked to
work with two circus artists: Grete Gross
and Priit Peetris. I knew that Kaspar had
always wanted to make work with circus.
He is a multitalented guy who never has
a lack of great ideas. So we met at cafe
Boheem and discussed the possibilities.
Kaspar gave me his CD to listen to. I liked
the music very much; it sounded to me
like traditional clown music with a little
bit of a spooky touch--just as it should be.
Invitation to RE RE RIGA!
At the end of 2013, Odrija Fišere from RE
RE RIGA! festival contacted me and proposed several ideas for collaboration. In
the beginning of 2014, it became clear
that we could proceed with producing a
new performance for the festival in Riga
2014. So I contacted Kaspar and I made
an open call for Folie artists. Five of them
were interested, but Priit was occupied
with his military service. After World Circus Day, all the artists met for the first
brainstorming session.
Lizeth, aerialist:
“I was inspired by Kaspar
and during the creation
process I found inspiring
the different aspects of
human behaviour that
create the characters
that we represent, and
other little things, just by
exploring the objects and
props that we have.
We did not have a lot of
time to prepare because
of people being away or
involved in other projects.
So when we finally had
some time to build the
show we were doing it
very intensively. And it
seems that it has been
working for us.
Preparing the show and
building the show were
going hand in hand. The
timetable was very tight.”

It wasn’t easy to make the show happen
The application for funding was due May,
which was actually quite late. By that
time, Kaspar had already produced a scenario and drawings of the scenography.
The scenography was to become our
biggest headache throughout the creative process. I began to realize that we
needed a spec
