What’s a can’t-miss moment on your ship and a tip
to make the most of a riverboat experience?
Jerry: The Riverlorian chats, of course! It is also fun to watch the
smokestacks lower for bridges and watch the deckhands do their work
while landing or departing a port.
Plus, take advantage of the resources available in the chart room. We
have a GPS monitor, a USGS water monitor, charts of the cruise, maps
of the cruise to take, books that can be checked out, binoculars to check
out, and there is always a great view of the river, in any weather.
Bobby: Be up on deck with me when we pass through the first lock, no
matter what time of day or night it is, as it’s truly fascinating.
Laurence: A can’t-miss moment is the cruise through the Columbia
Gorge, particularly on a beautiful, clear day. You’ll pass majestic snow-
covered Mt. Hood rising up from the Hood River Valley, seemingly
hovering over the city of Hood River, and perhaps see a large number
of colorful sails out on the water or the billowy kites of the kiteboarders
out for a thrill ride in the windy Columbia Gorge.
My tip to cruisers is to participate, be present and take in the scenery.
You may only see a particular scene from that angle, that quality of
light at that time of year from the deck of a riverboat once in your life.
If the weather is decent, frankly, I would choose to miss a happy hour
or even the occasional meal, so that I could adequately take in the
scenery. There are always snacks available 24/7, and then there is the
room service option.
