Project Power programs to be strengthened with grant funding

Expanded opportunities for adults with special needs in our community
Anoka-Hennepin Community Education received a $ 5,000 grant from the Metropolitan Regional Arts Council , and was recognized Jan . 13 with a check at Silverwood Park in St . Anthony . The grant will provide participants enrolled in three unique arts activities coordinated by the Project Power program the opportunity to expand on arts , theater and musical learning experiences .
Project Power provides specialized classes for adults with special needs . The activities and classes coordinated by the program offer educational , recreational and social activities for participants to practice life skills to increase independence , communication and community integration .
Three activities will be impacted by the grant , which include Merry Music Makers , Rhythm and Bells , and Project Power LIVE performing groups . " These three programs make up the core of our music and theater opportunities for individuals within the Project Power program ," Noella Fath-Cutter , coordinator of adult learning programs at Anoka- Hennepin Community Education , said . " Our goal is to provide the skills and training for participants to feel more confident in their performance and onstage skills , and for staff to receive additional training that could be used to continue the process in the future ." These activities will be funded , in part , by an appropriation from the Minnesota State Legislature with money from the state ’ s general fund .
The grant will allow Anoka-Hennepin Community Education to expand and enhance the music and drama experiences for participants in the three performing groups with new instruments , props and a unique trip to the Minnetonka Choral Society , in which they will learn from professionals in the field through observation and education of a professional choir and director . The participants will then take what they learned and showcase their own talents ranging from song , improv , dance , stand-up comedy and more during a performance for family , friends and community members during the annual spring showcase , “ Project Power LIVE !” Apr . 19 at Champlin Park High School .
Theodore “ Ted ” Brown will be returning to the program this year to perform in the show for the fourth time . Past performances of his have ranged from studying artists and then singing and playing the keyboard or piano to tunes from George

Harrison of the Beatles and David Bowie . This year , he plans a tribute to the late country artist , Conway Twitty . His favorite part is studying the music , “ That is the most serious part ,” he explains . “ Sometimes if I can ’ t get it right , I get someone [ from Project Power ] to help me . We go to the library to get the music .”

Brown recalls getting a little nervous before performing his first year at Project Power LIVE , and that the friends he made through the program encouraged him . “ My friend , Shannon [ Murray ] said , ‘ Be there or be square !’ and now I like to tell that to whoever comes around nervous .”
“ By continuing to find new ways to engage the participants and showcase the talents of these amazing musicians , the program can continue to grow and sustain itself ,” Fath-Cutter said . Which is important , as Fath-Cutter adds , “ Every year there are audience members from the community who attend the performance and comment on how much they enjoyed the performance and how amazed they are by the talents of the group .”
“ You just have to get out there , and the crowd will applaud ,” Brown said . “ You can be the person you can become .” ■
