PREPARING STUDENTS FOR LIFE PAGE 2 Jackson Middle School looks to reduce disciplinary incidents, increase achievement with Two-Minute Warning program In an effort to reduce discipline issues among students, such as repeated referrals and suspensions, Jackson Middle School (JMS) is exploring an innovative way to deal with classroom behavioral issues. The Two-Minute Warning program is an intervention tool aimed at addressing problem behavior before it escalates to the point of a referral and a trip to the principal’s office. The system was designed to identify students who have had issues with referrals in the past, but with a little help could reduce that number in the future. “These are kids who may have had anywhere from 10 to 20 referrals the previous year. That’s how we determined who was eligible for the program,” said Samuel Payne, a Student Achievement Advisor (SAA) at JMS, who created the program. “And we thought, hey, if we can get to these kids before the behavior escalates to referral status, we can reduce those numbers.” Payne meets with each s
