Volunteering looks different at each of our schools
A peek at how Watch D.O.G.S. prepare for duty at Wilson Elementary
Last month, 140 men gathered in
the Wilson Elementary School cafeteria and gymnasium for dinner, time
with their children, and to learn how
they could spend a day in the school
this year – because they care.
A video from the Watch D.O.G.S.
organization was shared with the men
in attendance at this kick-off meeting
and stated a staggering statistic: 35 to
75 percent of children do not have a
father figure in their home.
The men gathered to learn more
about Watch D.O.G.S. (Dads of Great
Students) – an innovative parent
involvement effort and volunteer program coordinated by Volunteer
Services, part of the Community
Education department, in cooperation
of school staff and the parent-teacher
community organization (PTCO) at the
school. The program places a father
figure in the school to support teachers and connect with students, supporting the primary goal of providing
positive male role models for the
students,
