Wellness corner this month... An open letter to the students by the IT Sarah Dear members of the EdUHK Community, Welcome back to school! We are looking forward to meeting you all and spending this new academic year teaching, learning, and having fun with all of you! To begin this small introduction about how we would like to spend this year with you, we would first like to emphasize the importance of mutual respect in a university environment. We believe that respecting your unique personalities is the most important quality tutors should demonstrate. University should be a place where you feel comfortable expressing yourselves, your ideas, comments, and constructive arguments. You are here to learn :) Please always remember that there is no such thing as a wrong question. Never hesitate to ask anything at all if you are not sure. In doing so, you will probably also help other students who had the same questions in mind, and thus encourage your peers to participate as well. As International Tutors, we will always encourage you to be openminded, as you learn about new cultures, lifestyles, and habits. To further your understanding of the material and widen your perspectives, we will be sending you further readings such as articles, web links, books, and videos to ensure that we are engaged in a dynamic and lively program for the year to come! I sincerely hope that our approach will encourage you to feel comfortable speaking in public, participate in teamwork activities, and express your ideas, observations, and constructive criticism. As I look back at my years in middle school, I realize that I always appreciated tutors who remembered that I had some difficulties in certain areas and generously adapted to my needs by making themselves available to talk to me after class to help me do better on the next exam. Such personal interactions always helped! For this reason, we invite you to come sit and talk with us during consultations or English cafés, to discuss any issues you may have on any topic at all! Remember that we are here to help you succeed as students, to help you enhance your language skills and broaden your horizons. Even if you would just like to have a nice little chat, you are always welcome! Finally, with regards to the teaching material we can help you develop your communication skills through a series of creative exercises designed to help you improve your reading comprehension, spelling and pronunciation as well as helping you enrich your vocabulary to be equipped with the necessary idioms and phrases to express yourselves clearly…all the while having FUN! Please feel free to reach out to the International Tutors and academic advising departments for workshop and activity recommendations, field trip ideas, and networking opportunities. The ASLLC is open to all comment and suggestions: Come make your voice heard! Enjoy the new year! Sarah
