What is Free , Prior and Informed Consent ?
The principle of Free , Prior and Informed Consent ( FPIC ) originated in 2007 when the United Nations General Assembly adopted the “ United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples .” It embodies international standards of respect for human rights , especially : “ all peoples have the right to self-determination ” and “ all peoples have the right to freely pursue their economic , social and cultural development .”
The declaration specifically mentions Free , Prior and Informed Consent as a prerequisite for “ any activity that affects their ancestral lands , territories and natural resources .”
Rainforest Trust committed a total of $ 17.7 million to projects benefiting Indigenous Peoples and local communities
( January 2021 — September 2022 )
But despite the approval of this declaration , progress toward its implementation has been slow and uneven . Exploitation of land , species , natural resources and the lives of Indigenous Peoples and local communities has continued unabated in many areas of the world .
Rainforest Trust has always held the rights , cultures and customs of Indigenous Peoples and local communities in the highest regard . With their long-standing links to land and waters , they are the stewards of threatened natural areas and the guardians of biodiversity in some of the last unexploited landscapes on Earth .
