Spotlight Client of the Month Executive Search & Consulting BURNS-MAGEE GROUP If construction was a wave, Burns Magee Group would be a professional surfer. Through the past 12 years of the companies’ history, the firm has seen both the industry’s best market times in decades and the worst market times in decades. Its founder Mark Burns has stayed the course and is now enjoying the next big wave. MARK BURNS Mark started recruiting 2001 after leaving his position as a national sales rep for Intellicom. The tech industry was changing at that time, moving into a slower growth mode. Because he had grown up around the construction industry (his uncle owned an architectural and engineering firm), he chose to recruit within construction. He wasn’t sure recruiting was going to be a good fit for him but it seemed like a good option at the time. Apparently it was the right choice for him because two years later, in 2003, he started Burns Magee Group with two other partners. Then followed the boom years of 2004-2007. Mark and his partners recruited in all segments of the industry including commercial, civil, and de velopment. During the downturn of 2009-2011, Mark stayed in touch with clients and continued to recruit within construction while also recruiting in the transportation industry. SUE YOUNG The Operations Manager for Burns Magee, Sue Young, came from the construction and development industry, building her career with national homebuilders in the Austin area. She began as a Project Manager in land development, and then became Land Development Manager for Centex Homes and then later Land Acquisition Manager. In 2008 Centex went up for sale and subsequently down-sized its workforce. Sue took the opportunity to stay home with her small children for a few years. While there are days when Sue misses getting her boots dirty and talking to crusty contractors, she enjoys recruiting because it is challenging and rewarding to help individuals improve their work/life situation. All indicators are that the construction industry is back on track. According to Mark Burns, “the last two years have seen a significant rise in construction and development in all sectors. We are working multiple searches from California to the Northeast.” Burns Magee has three offices; Dallas, Texas, Scottsdale, AZ, and Connecticut. 5080 Spectrum Drive Suite 1000 East - Addison, TX 75001 214-989-6846
