THIS SUMMER , GLENVIEW IS CELEBRATING ITS 125th ANNIVERSARY AS A VILLAGE !
In the late 1800s , as Glenview transitioned from a farming community to a suburb , it was becoming apparent that more services were needed than the existing county government could provide . A local government was desired to more quickly meet those needs , like sidewalks and water service .
The Swedenborgians , who had settled here in the 1890s , pushed for a referendum to incorporate as a village in 1898 under the Illinois Cities and Village Act of 1872 . It failed .
They made a second attempt in 1899 . On May 23 , Alfred Goerwitz , John B . Synnestvedt , Gerhard Clavey and 27 others signed an application at Glenview House seeking incorporation as the Village of Glenview . It was filed June 2 in Cook County Court , at which time Judge Orrin Carter scheduled a special election from 8 am to 7 pm on June 17 at the Rugen and Appleyard general store .
The question on the ballot was whether to form a village from Section 34 and most of Section 35 of Northfield Township . Of the population of about 350 , only men could vote . The tally was 59 for and 51 against . The results of the election were filed with the court on June 20 , 1899 – Glenview ’ s official date of incorporation . continued on page 2
