Newsletter January NKUHT won the gold medal at the 43rd WorldSkills Competition in Sao Paulo Ku Sheng-Wei, student from National Kaohsiung University of Hospitality and Tourism Department of Western Culinary Arts participated to the 43rd WorldSkills Competition held in Sao Paulo last summer. The WorldSkills Competition is an international competition held once every two years. In 2015 it took place in Sao Paulo, Brazil, from August 12th to August 15th. During 3 consecutive days, 39 skills competitions were organized, including CNC Milling, information technology; plastic die engineering, painting and decorating, hairdressing, patisserie and cooking. Ku Sheng-Wei was one of the 37 participants of the cooking category. He won the gold medal! “Taiwan is extremely competitive internationally in the cooking category. I was confident in the contestants. Ku Sheng-Wei underwent a long period of training, practicing constantly every day. He did not rest even on holidays in hope of winning glory for his country in this competition. This time, he went all out in the cooking competition and defeated 36 participating countries to win the gold medal. He truly deserves to be called an exceptional model for technical and vocational education” Professor Eddie Chen of NKUHT’s Department of Western Culinary Arts Two senior students of USFQ selected to participate in a products research Daniel Samaniego and Marco Moya, senior students of Culinary Arts at Universidad San Francisco de Quito, were selected to participate in the research conducted by the consulting team "Red de Guardianes de Semillas" (Seed Guardians Network) promoted by the Ministry of Culture and Heritage in Ecuador. The purpose of the research is to obtain information about products that are in danger of extinction in different areas of the country. Students were in charge of developing the study of the existing products in the following cities: Pelileo, Píllaro and Patate, all located in the Province of Tungurahua. This job will bring information for the creation of the book “Atlas Heritage of Ecuador”, which explains the products, features and possible uses not only for food, but also for the medical area. In addition, the project is meant to create awareness of the extinguished varieties in the region. Windham is going to Quito The new Wyndham Gran Condor Hotel is about to open in Quito next February 15th. USFQ participated in the pre-opening session. Students of the School of Hospitality Management and Culinary Arts helped on the organization of the hotel and received training. About 15 of these students now have a permanent job with the hotel. The fields where they will be working go from culinary and housekeeping to general manager assistant.
