FROM THE EDITOR

You can take the boy out of the country but you can ’ t take the country out of the boy .
It is with that thought in mind that I proposed a “ rodeo edition ” for our third installment of News and Tribune Sports magazine . I admit , without shame , that the idea was all mine and it was a selfish attempt to reconnect with a passion I carry for horses , riding and the cowboy way of life .
To be clear , I ’ ve never rode a bull or competed in team roping . I have ridden a few bucking broncs but it was in a pasture when my horses got spooked , not in an arena with a screaming crowd cheering me on .

I know horse people from a life lived in Nebraska , South Dakota and Wyoming . Now , thanks to this edition of NT Sports , I know horse people in Indiana as well . One thing I expected , and turned out to be true , is the draw I have to these people and the lifestyle I envy .

My meeting with Tim and Lynn Pope is a perfect example of why I so admire the western lifestyle . The Popes came to my office to have pictures of Tim shot for the cover of this issue . They were agreeable to drive into Jeffersonville – taking their time – to help me put this publication together .
Horse people are gracious .
Tim is a long-time rodeo clown and bull fighter . You can find his story beginning on page 30 . While Tim was putting on his clown makeup , I got a chance to chat with Lynn . Through conversation , I learned that she and Tim spent some time living in Wyoming near where my wife and I lived while in the Cowboy State . Lynn ’ s eyes lit up when she talked about Wyoming and how beautiful it is . She got excited to hear about my experiences while living there . By the time the conversation turned to rodeo , Tim had transformed from a mild-mannered cowboy into a baggy jean wearing , make-up sporting rodeo clown . The stories they shared , including the time Tim broke his neck in a rodeo , were like reading through a Louis L ’ Amour Western novel .
Chris Morris is a former editor at the News and Tribune . Chris , a resident expert on all things sports , will write a feature called “ Looking Back ” in each issue of News and Tribune Sports Magazine . He is currently employed at Baptist Health Floyd .
Andrew Harp is a reporter at the News and Tribune and has been since December 2023 . He has lived in the metropolitan area since January 2020 , covering subjects in Kentucky and Indiana like schools , politics and crime .
Erik Hackman is a May 2022 graduate of IU Southeast and has been a reporter at the News and Tribune since August 2022 . At the newspaper , his beats include Charlestown , Sellersburg and River Ridge . His favorite thing to write about is interesting Southern Indiana people .
Horse people are passionate .
As we set up our story board for this edition of the magazine , I wanted to make sure we talked with young people involved with rodeo as well as those with a more , shall we say , seasoned outlook on the sport . This issue won ’ t disappoint . As I edited the stories submitted by our writers , I was reminded how horse people seem to travel in packs . You ’ ll read again and again how they describe themselves as a “ tight-knit family .”
Horse people are connected .
I hope you find this issue of NT Sports magazine interesting and fun to read . I know it ’ s been a blast for me to help put it together . Thanks to all of the “ horse people ” involved for allowing me to travel down memory lane , if only for a little while .
