OUR THIRTY-FIFTH ANNIVERSARY YEAR HAS COME TO AN END , AND WE COULDN ’ T BE MORE GRATEFUL FOR ALL OF THE SUPPORT OUR EXTENDED FAMILY AND FRIENDS IN NATIVE CALIFORNIA HAVE SHOWN US . Many have written words of memory and praise for the magazine . We also had the opportunity to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the Heyday Berkeley Roundhouse ( our California Indian publishing program ). We even have a short commemorative documentary that is available for all of you to watch on YouTube featuring interviews with some of News from Native California ’ s most long-standing living supporters , including Cindi Alvitre ( Tongva ), Jennifer Bates ( Me-wuk ), former News editors Lindsie Bear and Jeannine Gendar , L . Frank ( Ajachemem / Tongva ), Julian Lang ( Kaurk ), Vince LaPena ( Nompitom Wintu ), and Ernest Siva ( Serrano / Cahuilla ). It is a beautiful film that was produced by Cody Lucich ( Maidu )— son of basketweaver Denise Davis — who grew up with the magazine throughout his life . In this issue , we are proud to have two special pieces from Kumeyaay territory , a historical essay from Michael Connolly Miskwish ( Campo Kumeyaay Nation ) as well as an “ In Our Languages ” feature from Viejas tribal member Virginia Christman . We have an extended feature and review about the new Netflix children ’ s series Spirit Rangers . And finally , we have our last feature of commemorative words in honor of this milestone anniversary for News .
