THIS PAST YEAR HAS ALLOWED US TO SLOWLY STEP BACK OUT INTO THE WORLD AFTER THE PANDEMIC SEPARATED US . While many events remain online , there have also been a lot of in-person cultural gatherings and conferences . It has been wonderful to see so many of you again here and there !
This issue of the magazine features profiles on California Native people that we hope will inspire you . We are so very proud to have a story focusing on tribal elder and culture bearer Clint McKay ( Wappo / Pomo ). We also have an interview with comedian Jackie Keliiaa ( Paiute / Washoe ). There is also an essay from Weshoyot Alvitre ( Tongva ) about a special project that was carried out in Los Angeles with Chemehuevi photographer Cara Romero .
A number of tribes across California have lost those dear to them this past year . We have quite a lot of “ With Respect ” tributes to some very important elders from across our homelands ; they include tribal elder Lawrence Marine ( Muwekma Ohlone / Maidu ), tribal elder Bill Wright ( Patwin ), Chief Fred Collins ( Northern Chumash ), basketweaver and Heyday Berkeley Roundhouse author Justin Farmer ( Kumeyaay ), and master language speaker Marie Wilcox ( Wukchumni ). We at News from Native California are sending love and strength to all of those who are grieving during this time . I grieve with you as I recently lost my father , and my tribe has recently had quite a lot of our members leave us as well .
I hope we all remember that life is a gift .
I do have something to share for all News readers to look forward to : This coming year , 2022 , is very special for us at News as it is the magazine ’ s thirty-fifth anniversary of publication . Our next issue will be dedicated to this commemoration and we will be celebrating all year long . If you have a milestone story from your California tribal community that you would like to share in this issue , we welcome those submissions . Also , be sure to visit the magazine ’ s website and follow along on social media for updates .
