Ac ’ a tawpaki pungish !
it ' s time for us to welcome 2017 . This past year was overwhelming in many ways , as it was full of battles . The election of a new president was a contentious one . Native peoples from across the hemisphere and world battled alongside the Standing Rock Sioux Nation to protect land , sacred sites , and water . All the while other struggles across the globe continued for human rights , justice , and peace .
Nevertheless , with any hardship comes an opportunity for growing , strengthening , and sharing knowledge . So in this issue we are focusing on what we are learning , both in our tribal communities and in education . We partnered with the good folks at the California Indian Culture and Sovereignty Center as well as the California Indian Museum and Cultural Center for a handful of great stories .
News welcomes lots of new contributors this time around . Humboldt State University student Camaray Davalos ( Pechanga Band of Luiseño Indians ) shares a perspective on “ Decolonizing Medicine .” Shawnte Leanne ( Ione Band of Miwok Indians ), an M . F . A . candidate at the California Institute of Integral Studies , takes us through a touching childhood memory with the story “ The Insect Warriors .” And Cal Poly Pomona professor Sandy Kewanhaptewa-Dixon ( Hopi ) interviews Tongva elder Barbara Drake about the work she does with community gardens .
For our regular features , “ In Our Languages ” is in Chukchansi . There is a rare music review on an album from the Bay Area – based group Almas Fronterizas . “ With Respect ” includes a tribute from my own family to Helen Jose , who shared so much with our tribal community on the Torres Martinez Desert Cahuilla Indian Reservation .
Last , I would like to say that this coming year is a very exciting one for us with lots to look forward to . News from Native California will be celebrating thirty years of publication . We will be hosting events across the state to celebrate the communities who have shared so much with us throughout the decades . Please keep your eyes open for celebrations near your area as well as a very special issue of News in the spring !
