In this special issue of News from Native California , you will find poetry written by Native poets across the United States . We have highlighted and prioritized California Native poets while also including work from Native people who , although not tied to California tribally , share perspectives that many of us can relate to . Some of the poems are about land and traditional plant use , others are about colonization and intergenerational trauma . However , the one thing these poems all have in common is that they are a celebration of Native resilience , survivance , and existence . When I read these poems , one thing is clear in my mind : we are still here .
My time at Heyday has been nothing short of momentous . I have learned skills that will help me in my future career , I have written about important tribal news and events , and I have had the privilege of working closely with inspiring people such as Terria Smith and Emmerich Anklam . Most importantly , I have gotten to share words and stories from Native people across the state . From publishing interviews with Native small-business owners to highlighting the work of inspiring Native women , I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to bring light to the people who make our communities beautiful .
It is extremely fitting that my last issue of News is focused on poetry . I am immensely honored to curate this special edition and share the words of so many talented Native writers . I have been given the true gift of reading and experiencing their work , and now I would like to extend that gift to you . Thank you , achama , enjoy .
