This year we are celebrating the thirty-fifth anniversary of publishing News from Native California magazine . Which may seem like a long time . But in terms of how long California ’ s tribal people have been here , it ’ s almost no time at all . Nevertheless , in these years we hope that we have made a significant contribution to the recording of histories , revitalization of cultures , and visibility of the state ’ s Indigenous peoples . We have made friendships and shared memories , and are looking forward to a strong future .
Thank you so much to everyone who has contributed stories , poems , photos , and artwork not only for this special issue but in all the editions of the magazine throughout the years . We are so proud to feature submissions this time around that come from more than twenty tribes across California . Again , this is only a fraction of the tribes in our region . But the wonderful thing about having a quarterly magazine in honor of the state ’ s peoples is that there is always more opportunity .
In this issue we have two “ With Respect ” tributes , in honor of Betty L . Wicks Hall ( Shasta ) and Lupe Renee Mora Massiatt ( Muwekma Ohlone ), who have both passed on . We have a story about the new tribal administration building for the Tolowa Dee-ni ’ Nation . There is a feature about the future California
