The popularity of the Summer 2020 issue has brought so many of you to the magazine and we are so grateful to you for supporting the work we do in illuminating California tribal voices . It is incredible that in spite of times like these — when we are required to be physically distant due to a global pandemic — we are still building community .

For this , we partnered with the Advocates for Indigenous California Language Survival ( AICLS ). AICLS worked with the Owens Valley Paiute Shoshone Cultural Center and the Manzanar National Historic Site to put together programming that centered around the parallel experiences of those who were placed in Manzanar , a Japanese internment camp , during World War II and those who are descendants of the Nüümü tribal people whose reservation homelands neighbor the site of the camp . This program was made possible thanks to a grant from the California State Library ’ s California Civil Liberties Education Program .
