IMPROVING THE SPEEDWAY

Once pen went to paper, Harmon and Middleton went to work to revitalize the speedway.
The first thing: kick gravel to the curb.
“ We started off immediately blacktopping everything that was gravel,” Middleton said.“ Brent doesn’ t like gravel or dust, so that was his first thing to do. They were finishing up the blacktop [ Tuesday, March 24 ] and it’ s going to be nice. That was one of the biggest projects.”
Additionally, the duo expanded parking for the racers and blacktopped it as well, so they could have a better parking area.
With the big project done, next came implementing two lines of handicap parking. Handicap parking is“ huge for Brent” with parking near the fence and another side right across from it.
“ He’ s very adamant about handicap parking and if you’ re there without a placard or license plate, then you will be towed,” Middleton said.
In the midst of all the changes, the duo had to talk with Glenn
Luckett, who is on his third stint of working as the Director of Race Operations at the speedway.
He worked for Owen Thompson from 1995-2000, then owned Champion Racing Association, a racing management business, during that time and sold the business after the 2021 season.
Luckett went back to working for Thompson in 2022 then added on three years to work with Bohanon before retiring in July 2025. But he couldn’ t stay away from the speedway and decided to come back.
“ The speedway is only a mile away from my house and it’ s hard to be so close to the race track and not help somebody who needs help,” Luckett said.“ Obviously, I want the race track to be successful, not only for the owners but for the city of Salem and Washington County. Brent and Melisa have made the commitment to get this place to a different standard and they have. They’ re putting in asphalt and teasing a lot of stuff. The industry has changed a lot in the last 10 years on the insurance side of stuff. There are a lot more safety requirements and inspections that you have to have and that leads to more money being spent, but it’ s in the right places. They’ re doing the right things to make it a lot better for the fans when they come in and racers to come race here.”
