Both Grantz and Steinfeldt said parents have a significant role to play in their child athlete’ s mental health. Grantz said a large part of his work is making sure his students are“ not worried about mom and dad” while they’ re playing.
However, at the college and professional level, when that pressure becomes self-induced or starts coming from fans, a different solution is needed, Miller said.
Miller said that more athletic organizations need to bring attention to mental health, possibly on a public-relations campaign level. “ You’ ve got to be able to incentivize this in the way that the research is finally looking at concussions,” Miller said.“ How do we continue to fund work in terms of mental toughness, mental resilience and mental skills as it relates to overall health and well-being?”
