In the hills of Southern Indiana, a few select high schoolers do something for sport that some people will never do their whole lives. They shoot guns.
Will Baker, 18, stands on the edge of a concrete swatch at Indian Creek Shooting Center in Georgetown, eyes on the sky. When his 12-gauge shotgun is propped against his shoulder, everything else is white noise.
“ Pull,” he says.
In trap-shooting, there are five stands with five clays thrown at each stand. Each competitor shoots two rounds, making for 50 opportunities to hit the target total.
Baker says“ pull” 50 times. He hits the target 47 of those.
That’ s how the Borden High School trap-shooting team won its season tournament. Of 250 possible points across a five-person team, Borden scored 208— two digits higher than the second-place team, New Haven High School.
