9 Open Space & Recreation
City Parks / Facilities
City parks and open spaces are managed and conserved by the City of Newport. These include Ballard Park, King Park,
Miantonomi Memorial Park, and Touro Park. These locations are identified in Map 9-3.
Ballard Park
Ballard Park consists of 13 acres of natural open space filled with various plant species. There are five trails
throughout the park that visitors may hike on. This park also houses two 20th century quarries, of which some trails
lead to.
King Park
King Park is located on the Newport Harbor on Wellington Avenue. The park includes a beach, the King Park Gazebo
(which may be rented out for special occasions), fishing pier, playground, picnic tables, and a grassy area for play.
Miantonomi Memorial Park
Miantonomi Memorial Park is a 30-acre park located on a hilltop in the North End. The park is home to a World War I
memorial and provides areas for picnics, play equipment, and playing fields.
Touro Park
Touro Park is home to the Old Stone Mill Tower and has been around for over 150 years. The park, located on
Bellevue Avenue, is used as the site for Earth Day activities and the annual Craft Fair.
Private Open Space
Signature private open spaces and recreational areas are owned and maintained by private agencies. These open
spaces include the Newport Country Club, the Preservation Society of Newport County’s properties, the Girl Scout
Camp (Camp Rocky Farm), and Blue Garden. These locations are identified in Map 9-3. Salve Regina University,
Newport Casino, the Naval Education and Training Center, and Navy Hospital Recreation Centers are some of the
other private or quasi-public areas that contain open space or recreation facilities that are available on a limited basis.
Newport Country Club
This country club is a private golf club, founded in 1893. The club contains 188 acres of golf course and a clubhouse.
The Preservation Society of Newport County
The Preservation Society of Newport County is a non-profit organization founded in 1945. This society owns nine
major historic houses, each with surrounding landscaped properties. These include:
