Small but mighty , Rhode Island is New England ’ s little pocket of paradise . Within its 1,200 square miles of coast , farmland , cityscape and woods , you can spend your whole life here , as many do . Just because it ’ s the smallest state doesn ’ t mean it has nothing to offer — in fact , it ’ s quite the opposite .
Because we ’ re the smallest , we tend to pack the most punch . We have less room to offer the most love for a multitude of cultures , so we squeeze it all in . Rhode Island prides itself on local love , from the Creative Capital of Providence all the way down to the tip of Westerly ( just be sure to pack a lunch for the long , forty-five-minute car ride ). Discover the beautiful history behind each town — trust me , just ask a local at any pub or packie and they ’ ll be giving you the full rundown with their neighbors and cousins before you know it .
Of course , there are the old rivalries of the University of Rhode Island ’ s Rams versus Providence College ’ s Friars , East Bay versus West Bay , Newport versus Narragansett and so on , but we ’ ll let you decide your stance . Just be prepared to defend it at any cost .
Nestled right between Boston and New York City , our accent is hard to nail down as we pull from both , but we ’ re unique in our own way . We have little quirks in our vocabulary , how we use landmarks to give directions and the little pieces of history that make this state one of the best .
This state is home , not only to me but to many families , retirees , vacationers , college students and young working professionals . From Newport ’ s mansions , to triple-decker apartments in Providence , to log cabins in the woods , to beach shacks by the sea , there ’ s a place for everyone to make a house a home . Whether you ’ ve stumbled upon it on your way to Boston or you plan a destination vacation , you ’ ve struck gold when you discover Rhode Island . Welcome to the Ocean State , we hope you stay awhile .
