As the city ’ s population continues to grow , Tahlequah has become a destination for families , professionals , and new businesses . Tahlequah is located in Cherokee County and has a population of nearly 16,500 people . Residents can get an education , find a good job , rent or buy a home , and raise their kids all without leaving city limits .

There are plenty of affordable housing options in the city and for those wishing to buy , median home cost is far lower than the Oklahoma average . Many reputable contractors also work in the area and can help anyone wishing to build their dream home .
Tahlequah is home to Northeastern State University , the fourth-largest public university in Oklahoma . NSU students can live on campus in dormitories , suite-style apartment buildings and married student housing for those who have children . Hooking Up
With several utility providers in the area , Cherokee Country is capable of providing electricity , water , and gas services to its nearly 50,000 residents . Most residents will receive electricity services through either Tahlequah Public Works Authority or Lake Region Electric Cooperative . In Tahlequah , gas services can be provided by the Northeastern Oklahoma Public Facilities Authority while the Hulbert Public Works Authority has coverage in Hulbert . LREC mainly provides electricity to residences in rural area and some parts of Tahlequah .
Lake Region Electric Cooperative
LREC is in the process of expanding its fiber optic network , which delivers high-speed internet , to service rural communities in the area .
