Charter Schools
The Cherokee Immersion Charter School enrolls grades Pre-K through eighth , and the new location is in the Durbin Feeling Language Center in Tahlequah . The language center is named in honor of Durbin Feeling , the Cherokee Nation ’ s single-largest contributor to the Cherokee language since Sequoyah . It was founded by the Cherokee Nation for the purpose of preserving the heavily endangered Cherokee language . Originating in 1871 as an Indian Boarding School to take care of orphans of the Civil War , it evolved to the 90-acre campus it is today . Students are eligible to attend if they are members of a federally recognized tribe , or are one-fourth blood descendants of such members .
